THE HUNGER GAMES
I just finished Suzanne Collins's exciting action novel THE HUNGER GAMES, and I'm eager to continue with the trilogy.

The Hunger Games is set in a dystopian future, where most of North America is under the control of The Capitol, located somewhere in the Rocky Mountains: elitist, coldblooded, manipulative, and armed with such advanced technology that the 12 Districts under their control stand little chance of rebelling or even negotiating for a more equitable arrangement. Every year, on the anniversary of a failed revolution, each district must send 2 "tributes," one male and one female teenager, to compete in the Hunger Games, which are a sort of cross between reality TV and the gladiatorial games of ancient Rome.

The heroine, Katniss Everdeen, is also the first person narrator. Though seemingly outclassed by the "Careers," teens from the wealthier districts who actually train to compete in the Games, she brings a strong character, the skills of a woodsman and bow hunter, and a quiet, patient stoicism that in fact make her their superior. As Katniss observes at one point: "They don't know how to be hungry."

Coming from one of the poorest districts, somewhere near what used to be Appallachia, Katniss is accustomed to cold, hunger and deprivation. Her character, skills, and the timely help of a few allies enable her to overcome what seemed to be impossible odds.

At the end of the first book Katniss and her friend Peeta have survived he games, but their fate at the hands of the Capitol, as well as the nature of their personal relationship, remain in question.
