NICOTINE STAINS
In the Sherlock Holmes story, "The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez," Professor Coran is described as having nicotine stains on his beard and fingers. No wonder. When he offers Holmes his specially made cigarettes he tells him that he gets 1000 at a time and is compelled to reorder them once a fortnight.

So a fortnight is 2 weeks or fourteen days. Divide fourteen into a thousand and you get an average consumption of 71 cigarettes per day. Modern day cigarette packs hold only 20 cigarettes on the average.

The professor smokes 3 and a half packs a day. No need to send this guy to jail; just wait a couple of years for him to die of lung cancer of COPD.
